Listen to your text instead of reading it
Some passages are easier to take in by ear than by eye: a long email you are about to send, a set of instructions you need while your hands are busy, or a paragraph in French that you want to hear pronounced properly. Paste the words into the box above and this page reads them back to you, using the voices already installed on your phone or computer. There is nothing to install, nothing to pay and no account to create.
Try it with something ordinary
Start with a sentence you actually need, rather than a test phrase. A note such as "The meeting moves to Thursday at ten, and I will bring the printed agenda" works well, because hearing it back often shows up a clumsy word or a missing detail that your eyes skipped over. Then try a line in another language, for instance "Merci beaucoup, à bientôt" with a French voice, or a Chinese greeting if your device offers a Chinese voice. Slowing the speed down makes an unfamiliar pronunciation much easier to follow.
Shaping how it sounds
Three sliders sit beside the Play button. Speed sets how quickly the words come; pitch raises or lowers the voice; volume sets how loud it is. Play starts the reading, Pause holds it where it is so you can pick it up again, and Stop ends it altogether. If a voice you expected is not in the list, that is because the list only shows what your own browser and device provide — French and Chinese voices appear only when your device has them, and adding one means adding it to the device, not to this page.
Who finds this handy
Language learners use it to check pronunciation before speaking. Writers use it to proofread, since a mistake that hides on the page often stands out when it is spoken. Anyone with tired eyes, or a long article to get through, can listen while doing something else. It works on a desktop and on a phone, in the browser, with no app.
What it does not do
The speech is played live through your device speakers and is not saved as a file, so there is no audio download here. If you need a recording, record the playback with a screen recorder. No account is needed, and the voices belong to your own device.
Finding this page again
People reach this reader in different ways — searching for a French voice, a Chinese voice, a free way to hear text online, or a reader that offers different voices. Whichever phrase brought you here, this is the same free page: paste text, choose a voice and press Play.
