A scannable label without a design programme

Picture a market stall on a Saturday morning: jars of jam, folded notebooks and a small rail of handmade clothes, each needing a label a till can read. This page turns a product code into that label. It draws an EAN-13 or UPC-A barcode in your browser, puts the numbers underneath, and lets you save it as a PNG or send it straight to the printer. It costs nothing, and your codes stay on your own device.

When the code will not scan

Most failed barcodes fail for one of three reasons, and all three are easy to avoid. First, the code itself: EAN-13 takes twelve digits and adds a thirteenth check digit, while UPC-A takes eleven digits and adds a twelfth, so a digit too many or too few will be caught before anything prints. Second, size: a barcode shrunk to fit a tiny label often stops scanning, so keep it large enough for the till to read. Third, the blank space at each end — the quiet zone — has to stay empty; text or a border that crowds the bars will confuse a scanner.

From digits to a printed label

Choose the kind of barcode first. EAN-13 is the one seen on retail goods around the world, including clothing labels; UPC-A is the one used for products in North America. Then type the product code, add words to print underneath if you like — "Strawberry Jam 250 g" on a jar, for example, or a size and colour on a garment tag — and set how tall the bars should be. Press Generate Barcode, check that the numbers under the bars match what you typed, and then download the PNG or print it.

Where the code goes

Once it is printed, the same barcode works wherever a scanner is: on a shop shelf, on a garment tag, on a packet in a warehouse, or on a stall table. Shops and warehouses rely on these stripes to tell one product from another at a glance, and a small business can make its own labels the same way, without ordering them from a printer. The barcode is drawn as an image, so you can place it in your own label layout too.

Finding this page again

People look for this in different words — barcodes for clothing, fabric barcode labels, pre printed barcode stickers, a barcode generator for clothing, or a free barcode generator for a small business. Whichever phrase you used, this is the same free page: type the digits, generate the barcode, download it and print.
